Tuesday

Discuss "series" concept in photography.  Show examples.  Students will use copies of Pop. Photo (Backstory) to find and discuss opportunities for photographic series. Look for examples online of photographic series and bring to class on Thursday.

Wednesday

Discuss photo editing.  Look through copies of Popular Photography (Digital Toolbox/The Fix) and find and discuss how photo editing can improve and/or change the focus or meaning of a photograph. Find examples of photo series--due Thursday.

Thursday

Look at and discuss the series examples brought to class.  Discuss the importance of critiques and how we as artists grow from them. Examples of photo series due today!

Friday

Class critique.  Discuss favorite series ideas in class and find out which are good and WHY! Find examples online of 1 or 2 of your favorite series ideas!  Bring in on Monday!

Look at photo series brought in to class.  Discuss Personal Mission Statement.  Show examples. Go over class assignments on syllabus.  Discuss "Fruits of the Spirit" series.  Rest of week: students will take pictures of a variety of subjects for a class critique on Friday.      Write a Personal Mission Statement.  Due Friday.

Work on Personal Mission Statement. Discuss "Faceless Portrait" assignment and how it could be interpreted.  Why are portraits considered the most challenging yet interesting themes in art??? Bring thumb-drive image for class work tomorrow.

Critique of random photographs taken during the week.  Analyze for composition, context, craftsmanship. Personal Mission Statement due!

Discuss a "thematic hook."  What is it and how can a theme capture the attention of the view and tie together a series of compositions into a "story" that the artist wishes to tell. Think of examples. Look for examples of series of artwork that use the thematic hook approach. Write a 1 page typed list of ideas and explanations of each that you may want to choose from for each quarter's photo series.  Due Friday.

Class discussion of editing work.  View video "The Third Man."  Discuss camera angles, use of shadows, emphasis and perspectives. None.

Continue watching video. Discuss 1st assignement - "Faceless Portrait."  Due 9/4.  What does this mean to each student and how can you show the substance of a person without showing their face?  Give examples. None.
