Thursday

Begin Abstract Portrait using colored pencil and photo brought from home.  Students will create an abstract composition incorporating a photograph of themselves that reflects their inner selves.  Begin with a list of descriptors and then incorporate those images into the composition. Begin planning Artist's Statement, due with completed project. Artist's Statement due with completed project, Friday.

Continue abstract portrait.  Students will begin creating the paper background for the second phase of their portrait project.

Assign first weekly drawing--due this Friday!

"My Other Side."  Include 50-word paragraph on back describing the drawing, what it means to you, what was enjoyable, hard, easy, etc. about the process and anything you'd like me to know about it.

Thursday

Students who finish may write their artist's statement.  Discuss next project--a still-life drawing.  Students will begin this unit by finding any object available in classroom and drawing it REALISTICALLY with all shading and cast shadows on 9 X 12 paper.  The final project will be a large still-life (set-up in classroom) on 12 X 18 paper in pencil. None.

Begin working on watercolor version of the still-life.  Demonstrate how one achieves a variety of values in watercolor. have students practice on a small piece of wareercolor paper before they begin.  Emphasize drawing the contour lines in lightly! None.

Monday

Begin mixed media piece.  Students will choose a theme, then create a watercolor background on watercolor paper.  Using Sharpies, they will "break up the plane" using geometric shapes.  Over this background they will print terxtural objects such as leaves, twigs--anything that has texture that will take ink and leave an impression that goes along with their theme.  After the prints are dry, the students will then work back into their design with details in sharpie or acrylic paint. Assigned for Friday: A REALISTIC ANIMAL--from life or photo, shaded and complete!

Begin Oil Pastel, Watercolor Resist triptych.  Students will discuss the properties and technique of oil and water "resisting."  Discuss a triptych and what it means.  Students will create a three-fold work of art using plant forms as references--using 3 pieces of watercolor paper and representing the leaf, flower ansd fruit of a plant. None.
