COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

 

7th GRADE ART WHEEL:  Students in this course will focus on studio activities that explore a variety of 3-dimensional media and materials. The emphasis of this study will be upon artisitic techniques and processes as they apply to various forms of sculpture. Students will learn to implement sound design principles and good craftsmanship skills to create unique works of art.

8th GRADE ART WHEEL:  Students in this course will focus on studio activities that explore a wide range of subject matter, evaluating art works using criteria based upon an established model of art criticism. The emphasis of this study will be upon creative problem solving. Students will use the language of art criticism and aesthetics to describe, analyze, and evaluate their own and others' works of art in periodic class critiques.

8th GRADE ART SYLLABUS

DRAWING AND PAINTING:  The purpose of this course is to enable students to develop basic perceptual, observational, and compositional skills necessary to communicate a range of subject matter, symbols, ideas, and concepts using knowledge of drawing and painting media, processes, and techniques. Emphasis will be upon an exploration of content and context as it applies to the connections students at this level should be making between art and their world.

CERAMICS:  The purpose of this course is to enable students to recognize the properties, possibilities, and limitations of clay by creating functional and nonfunctional works in clay using basic hand-building and potter's wheel techniques.  Students will create, fire, and glaze original vessels and pieces of sculpture.  Emphasis will be upon incorporation of original design elements into student work that creates a synthesis of form and function.

PHOTOGRAPHY I:  This course is designed to help the student learn to use the camera creatively, to process film into negatives, and to make black and white prints. While learning the technical aspects of camera and darkroom use, the emphasis of this course will be mainly upon photography as an art form. Students will explore the formal and expressive qualities of black and white photography while learning to apply critical thinking and analysis skills through practical darkroom experience coupled with classroom discussion on the characteristics of good art.

PHOTOGRAPHY II: This course will introduce students to the tools of digital imaging within a conceptual framework that emphasizes individual creative practice.  The class will offer students a foundation for incorporating digital tools into their artistic process as well as emphasize the unique opportunities of the medium.  Projects will support a critical examination of digital tools and processes creating a context with which to critically assess and evaluate their own and others' work.
