Residential Care “I feel good about me
when I’m fishing. My GeePaw taught me
it’s important to take care
of the little things by the way you fish,” Tony
whispers while sitting silently on the banks of his favorite lake.
What
are your fondest memories from childhood?
If your memories are like Anthony’s,
count yourself among the lucky.
Too
many children, today, live with their nightmares. Whether it was
being locked away in a dark room for hours at a time,
cringing when a
door slams
because it once announced the arrival of a drunken parent or other
abuse ranging from physical to sexual because
they were “in the way.”
An average
of 28,000 children are abused or neglected
in homes across the Southeastern
United States every day. That
works out to one child suffering from abuse
every
45 minutes
every day. Their futures are bleak unless
this
cycle of violence and despair is broken.
Their
hope is found living at Mount Dora Children’s
Home. Each child lives in one of three
warm, inviting and loving homes with a family
(their
houseparents) and 8-10 other children also
needing a special place to call home. They
will grow up here as children should … nurtured
and safe.
(The stories and faces of the children showcased in our "Stories from Home" are real. While they represent the actual lives of young people who have lived in the Children's Home past, these stories and faces do not tell the story of any child currently living with us)
