Mike's Story
“I'm motivated to succeed and will do whatever is necessary to make my life better,” Mike confidently states. That's because this high school senior uses his past to drive him to a better future.
Mike had a plan for his life. He knew what he wanted to do and how he was going to make it happen. That changed when his dad was killed in a needless auto accident. Mike lost his best friend, his strongest advocate and his way in life.
College, athletics and his faith no longer were important to Mike. He found himself skipping school, hanging out on the corner and drifting through life. Grief consumed him and some bad choices almost landed him in jail.
A school counselor finally broke through Mike's shell and encouraged him to turn his life around. That's when he decided a change of environment and friends was necessary. With his family's support, Mike came to Mount Dora Children's Home to complete his education and recapture his dreams. He will graduate in a few months ready to take on life.
Active in several sports, Mike rediscovered a love for basketball. Active in church, he is a leader in his church's youth group. His future is bright again. "I can realize my dreams, make my dad proud and fulfill my aspirations to become an engineer now," Mike ponders. "Before Mount Dora, I was to the point of 'Who cares?' and 'Why try?' Now I know you can only live when you follow your dreams."
"So many people have supported me," he admits. "I want to thank my Mom, my houseparents, my house brothers and my church for helping me get back on track. Without you, I wouldn't have a chance to realize a better life. Thanks!"
