“I was one of the meanest
kids in my school. I didn’t know why
I wasn’t happy then, but I know why I’m
happy now,” Kevin states. Today, this
published author has reason to smile.
“I was pretty mad as
a little boy. I stole and lied and didn’t
respect my mom and dad,” he
confesses. Why such negative behavior in
this young man?
His parents were consumed
with careers, hobbies
civic commitments and church. Their busy
schedules affected Kevin. He felt neglected
and wanted
their attention. He didn’t care how
he got it; he just wanted his parents to
notice
him. So, he acted out at school, church,
stores and anywhere else to force a reaction
from
them.
Instead of realigning their
priorities, it was easier to send him away.
Kevin’s
been at Mount Dora Children’s Home
for the last five years. Everyone, including
Kevin,
has been amazed at the changes in his life. “I
don’t always like the rules, but
I do like the structure living in my house.
What
I really like is the time and attention
my houseparents focus on me … not
because I’m bad or anything, but
because they care about me,” he comments.
Kevin’s
turned his energy into writing. In fact,
he’s written, and published,
two short novels exploring the adventures
of an energetic young man trying to find
his way
in the world. “I love the freedom
of putting words on paper. I can create
any world
I want and know what will happen and when.
That’s exciting!” he states.
Kevin
is learning a lot about himself, his potential
and God’s plan for his life.
He’s embracing this second chance
at life and exploring what it means to
believe,
and accept, God’s love for him. He’s
determined to be happier and recognize
what’s
truly important in life … family,
faith and fun. Read
