Billy's Story
“I was one of the meanest
kids in my school. I didn’t know why
I wasn’t happy then, but I know why I’m
happy now,” Billy states. Today, this
ambitious writer has reason to smile.
“I was pretty mad as
a little boy. I stole anything that wasn't tied down and lied and didn’t
respect my parents,” he
confesses. Why such negative behavior in
this young man?
His parents were consumed
with careers, hobbies,
social clubs and church. Their busy
schedules affected Billy. Feeling neglected
and starving for
their attention, he didn’t care how
he got it. Billy just wanted them to
notice
him. So, he acts out at school, church,
stores and anywhere else to force a reaction
from
them.
Instead of understanding what was driving his behavior, Billy's parents decided it was easier to send him away.
That's when he came to Mount Dora Children’s Home
five years ago. Angry, defiant and rebellious were gentle descriptions of a young man determined to challenge this injustice in his life.
“I
didn’t like the rules, my houseparents, my teachers or anything about being here. I couldn't understand why my parents would do this to me. I refused to let anyone get close because I knew this was some terrible mistake, some bad dream," Billy reflects.
"What
I really like about being here now is the time and attention
my houseparents focus on me … not
because I’m bad or anything, but
because they care about me,” he comments. Today, Billy turns his energy into creative and positive activities.
He loves to write. “I love the freedom
of putting words on paper. I can create
any world
I want and know what will happen and when.
That’s exciting!” he states.
Billy
is learning a lot about himself, his potential
and God’s plan for his life.
He’s embracing this second chance
at life and exploring what it means to
believe,
and accept, God’s love for him. He’s
determined to be happier and recognize
what’s
truly important in life … family,
faith and fun.
