Hamilton Cottage
“I used to think my
Mom loved my sister more than she loved me,” Antarius
confesses. As a result, his poor attitude and
behavior kept him in trouble. Today, he has
the right ingredients for a better life.
“I rebelled big time,” he
acknowledges. He would run away from school,
made friends
with the wrong people and let his grades
drop from A’s to barely passing. In his
frustration, Antarius would lash out uncontrollably
at his
Mom.
Initially counseling and foster
care didn’t
help this young man change his perspective
on life. It wasn’t until he moved into
Hamilton Cottage that he finally believed
every cloud had a silver lining. The individual
attention,
concern and care consistently showered on
him by his houseparents eventually helped
Antarius
soften.
“They helped me see
that deep down I knew my Mom cares for me.
I don’t know, maybe
she was afraid of raising a boy.”
Today,
he jumps in to help with household chores
and asks questions during the cottage
Bible
study. His grades are back in the A/B range
and he no longer disrupts his class. “This
is a good place. The people actually listen
to me,” he says.
“I finally got sick
of being in trouble all the time,” he
admits. “You have
more fun in life when you do the right
thing.”
Antarius is learning anger
management techniques, improving his self-esteem
and developing
a healthy work ethic. Developing an interest
in the Bible has helped him become more
aware of others and their needs. “Now,
I’m
willing to help someone else when they
need me,” he states.
“That’s a big step for him,” remarks
his housemom. “He has a lot of potential.
I’m glad Antarius has made the decision
to improve on it instead of ignore it.”
“I can do anything with God’s help, but
I can’t do it alone,” he says. Read
